I have been going to Lyle's for the past 5 years, mainly because of the cheap drinks and the music is usually decent. But when my state I.D expired I started using my passport and they no longer allowed me to come in. Even though they had known me as a regular they refused me because I only had a passport. I tried going to breakfast at Lyle's today with my underage sister and her boyfriend. We went just for breakfast but the waitress asked for our I.Ds and told us you had to be 21 to have breakfast. this is my 2nd favorite favorite bar in town. great place to go in the afternoon. happy hour goes w/out question. show up an hour or two early if you're planning on watching a vikes game though.

blue plate specials are great. drinks are ok. service is efin sht. but, they are workin for tips. if they dont want to tell me its last call for happy hour and then i get charged full price at 20 minutes to, it saves me on the tip.

Recently @ Lyles to snag some wireless and a few 241s. I waited for over an hour and a half for someone to check in with me and missed my last call because no one checked in. HARSH. I am disappointed at best.

Lyle's rocks. Best crowd, great service, cheap drinks and comfort food. GREAT and I mean GREAT place to watch sports. I agree with the previous poster who says Vic is the best bouncer of all time. :)

The people that are employed as "bouncers" at this establishment are not at all aware of what it takes to control their environment. They are reactive rather than proactive. They allow far too many people in the door for the space and then are pissed because those people are "in the way." On a recent visit I watched as the bouncers continually harassed two tables of patrons about getting up from their tables and being in the way. From what I could tell they were getting up to do things like greet new comers to their group and go to the bathroom. I would expect this to be usual behavior for a group at a bar. But apparently this was not the case for bouncers as they repeatedly said "I'm not going to tell you again stay at your table." "You are in the way." They tried to move as much as possible but eventually the bouncers started kicking them out because people with little power exercise big. I thought I would inquire as to the capacity of the bar and why they would let so many people in if it was such trouble to control them. I was of course immediately seen as a problem and treated with complete disrespect as I suggested they were reacting rather than being pro active to the situation. God forbid you suggest these "bouncers" are wrong because you will be kicked out for asking a question. I was already putting my coat on when I asked the question knowing that I would be asked to leave. I am never planning again to enter this establishement because they have decided to treat their customers with disrespect and contempt. Also when I called the state Fire Marshal and lodged a concern about the number of people they allow in and their true capacity they were very good about discussing this with me and said they would make sure to look into it.

Its hit or miss with this place. Methusela waits on you and she makes you wanna die, or betty bangs waits on you and you get everything instantly and with a smile. Skinny blonde gives you 27 minutes to decide what you want to drink then passes you off to blah blah blah. Just like any other place you go to. I gotta say though, you shouldn't have to co-ordinate your bar going experience with who's working just to avoid them. Over all...I think I'll be going there tomorrow night heres hoping for a good time?

I always love this bar and CANNOT wait for 3 for 1s to start again. The only problem I have ever had is the older lady with the gray braid that checks IDs at the door. I have had yellow papers numerous times and despite the fact that they are completely legit she always finds some seemingly arbitrary reason to not let me in. So if you are waiting on a new ID or have any papers avoid her at ALL costs!

drinks are decent, but not too strong :( . i like the food, good and hot. but i have a feeling i'd be unimpressed if completely sober. unfortunately i found out on my last visit 3-4-1s are only a summer deal. EFF ME!!! but all bitching aside, it's a decent place :)

I am going to be honest and put it out there that aside from its drink prices Lyle's leaves quite a bit to be desired. I know I know the service is notoriously bad, but the past several times I have been there set new standards in poor service. This statement coming from someone who works in the industry and understands what it is like to work in a bar. Tip (no pun intended) for Lyle's staff and red glasses lady in particular: "what do you want" is a bad way to ask someone what they want." "Make it fast" is rude. Especially before the customer even opens their mouth. A little civility and manners go a long way...try it out.

The bouncer at Liquor Lyle's refused to let my brother, with special needs in because they thought he had to much to drink - due to his mental disabilities he is slow. When we tried to explain this to the bouncer, we were told "Good to know" and ignored after that. Please don't go to this place that discriminates against special needs.

I've been going to Lyle's on the weekends for years. The best happy hour in town plus a great atmosphere. I have seen complaints posted from people who have gotten thrown out. The only people I've ever seen get thrown out are d-bags who are hammered and bothering people. I've never had problems with any of the staff, it's a great place to hang out.

9 out of 10 times, I love this place. Cheap, filling food, great drink specials. I was there last night, got one round of whisky cokes, it was fine. 2nd round, they tasted disgusting, I'm pretty sure the coke syrup was running out, and I tried explaining that to the waitress. You could even see how clear they were compared to the first round. But she was like, yeah, we've had a couple complaints about it, but they're nothing we can do, I even asked the bar manager, blah blah blah. So I was like, well, can I get something else, or can you not charge me for these cause I'm not gonna drink them? And she said no, cause it will come out of here pay check. So I was kind of annoyed I had to pay for a round of drink I took one sip out of.

DITTO on the management comments. I was booted out (nay, SHAMED by MGMT and STAFF into leaving like I had just walked in waving a vial of H1N1) after 2 hours of drinking because I came back from a smoke and was carded . Now, granted, my ID was clipped. And, granted, they did just endure a sting (for what, pray tell?) and they may have been a bit on edge, but I had perfectly proper, 100% LEGAL papers. Funny thing is, 20 minutes later I was assured by regulars at Mort's (one in particular - and those who know, KNOW) that I wasn't in the same boat. Please know the laws if you're going to manage a bar... To Mort's!

Lyle's is great. The drinks are strong and cheap, and the service has been getting better and better. The only reason I didn't give Lyle's 5 stars is that the management team seems to think that it is a good idea to be gigantic assholes all the time. It is sad that they treat you like they don't need your business (and it occasionally rubs off on the servers or bartenders)... though the servers have recently become decidedly more friendly lately. If this place was put under new management it would be the best bar in the Twin Cities, instead of just near the top.

It was not the greatest or the worst. It was just another crowded bar. It was a little cheaper and a little farther from the main strip of Uptown. No surprises. I dug how awkwardly eclectic the patrons were though. The parking lot was a joke and parking was an issue but I went on a Saturday night, so, take it for what it's worth. I'd probably go again but wouldn't suggest it if someone asked where I wanted to go.

Liquor Lyle's is one of the best bars in the country. If you disagree show up @ 115 W. Olive St. Ft. Collins Co. I will pummel you into such a state there will be nothing you can mutter besides Lyle's. Believe it. I have suffered enough for all of us. Don't be foolish like me and think there may be something better out there. It's a barren f"ing wasteland. Consider yourself blessed, the rest of us are at least a thousand miles away. That's almost a lifetime yo. We're bummin'. Life without Lyle's wouldn't be life at all.

Love the bar, love the people, love the 2 for 1's and the inexpensive, good food!! I try to go there every Friday, there is no place I would rather be! I have made a lot of wonderful friends there over the years, there is a good mix of people and I recommend it to all of my friends!

If I ever catch this lard ass downtown, he's going to be eating out of a straw for the next 3 months.

The saddest time of day is when Lyle's isn't offering happy hour. I once ordered a drink approximately one minute after happy hour ended. I must have looked close to tears because the bartender made my non-happy hour drink ridiculously strong (and also sort of smiled in a way that made me feel both pathetic and special).

Brian H-- I'm pretty sure I am NOT the person you are referring to, as I only interracted with my table that night, so I don't know how you could say I was "acting like a witch". We were only there about an hour or so. Also, the bouncer (now fired for being a complete ass) came up to our table, to say "Get up and get out" and I never said a word. We had just ordered a round for last call, it arrived, and then this jerk made his "everyone get out announcement" and stopped at our table first. My fiance asked if we could just finish our beers as we'd just ordered them, the bouncer took my fiance's beer. My fiance asked for his name and the managers name, the bouncer snarled "I am the manager" and then he and motioned for another bouncer to carry him out. We didn't start anything. We weren't yelling or drunk. We calmly asked to finish the round we'd JUST paid for. So my fiance was hauled out, and I watched with my mouth hanging open. Then the bouncer came after me. He lunged at my drink, I flinched away from him, and he threw it in my face. I hadn't. said. a. word. If sitting there in shock as someone assaults you is "acting witchy" well then, I guess that was me that you saw. Otherwise, I think you witnessed another thing on whatever night you were there. I didn't do anything wrong. And if you find people being mistreated entertaining, you're a sad individual.

The bar is OK, but the server's are terrible. I had some drugged out 60 year old woman who was slow as shit. Plus, my burger wasn't even cooked fully and the place made me sick. I think I'll stick with Ruldolph's 10pm cheeseburger and 2 for 1's.

About as close to a dive bar as you can get for the area. The 9pm-11pm 2 for 1 is killer. Lyle's is never too crowded during the week, and packed on the weekend. Recommended for MNF specials too ($1.50 Miller taps and cheap burgers)

How could you think that the Juke Box was going to bring in more money than the at least 8 tables you cleared out by not allowing us to listen to Obama's acceptance speech? and that's not even including the people WITHOUT TABLES that walked out. Lame HH for tap beer, they use small glasses (maybe 10oz?) instead of pints. $4.75 for Summit Winter is hardly a deal. Plus bartender was very unfriendly. She wouldn't allow a couple to get a whiskey-sour/whiskey 7 as part of the deal, said it had to be the same thing. WTF? Plenty of other places with better deals and friendlier staff.

i cannot understand how this place is still open. they have the rudest head manager (val). it keeps getting worse and worse. being born and raised in minneapolis, i can say that i've known literally dozens of people that have worked there and have gotten fired for the most ridiculous things ever. on top of that, people are often forced into qutting to make sure that they cannot claim unemployment. i am appalled at the treatment over the years of the staff, and i am also appalled at how customers are often treated by, in particular, val. do not go here unless you want your money to support an unjust establishment.

One of the best dive bar in uptown. Great happy hour, friendly bartender, cool crowd. 'THE' place to go (just to relax, don't expect anything happening!) on Thursday night if you live in that neighborhood.

Great happy hour specials. Free chicken wings at 6PM during the week. 2 for 1 tap beer until 6PM. (We bring our own spices for the wings. They also have a short list of $2 app's until 6PM week nights. We've never had a bad server during the week.

I live in a different state now, but I have nothing but fond memories of Lyle's. Well, except for Val's rudeness... But I was a regular at Lyle's from '92 (Howie days) until I moved, in 2001. I go back whenever I'm in town. The staff changed, BIG TIME, and the place is a bit brighter. When did it go to non smoking? no complaint... lol. I must have spent THOUSANDS at Lyle's over the years and don't regret any of it. The people I met in there, I'll never forget many of them. hmm, sounds like I need to visit Minneapolis soon doesn't it? I'll surely stop in at Lyle's!!!!

Drink specials are good and the food is ok, but don't ever go there to watch a sports game. Went there to watch a Wild Playoff game... Even called ahead to make sure it would be on with sound. Five min into the game someone plunks a few bucks into the jukebox and the game sounds cut out and the music starts playing. Our waitress said nothing could be done about it. Needless to say we left.

I have never written an online review of a bar or restaurant, and shy away from reading them because I feel that people that have had a bad experience are more likely to review an establishment. I had been to Lyle's maybe two or three times before tonight, but had never sat at the bar. Tonight, I sat at the bar with a friend of mine who is a regular. First, I had to wait over ten minutes to get a drink, despite sitting in a stool right at the bar. I was completely visible, yet the bartender skipped over me three times. I am a bartender, so I always give the benefit of the doubt, because I know I make mistakes and it can be a tough job. Once I finally got a beer ordered and delivered I attempted to order two tacos for myself and two for my friend. The bartender proceeded to argue and chastise the verbiage that I used to order our food, bickering about the difference between an order vs. a single taco. I apologized for my naivety, and tried to explain in simple language that I wanted two tacos for myself, and two for my friend. Between 10 and 15 min. later multiple taco orders were delivered to other patrons. My friend and I got the bartenders attention questioned if the recently delivered order to other patrons might have been ours, at which point be responded that he hadn't ordered us tacos because,"you guys refused to order right." I was completely taken aback by this and immediately and without hesitation burst out, " Are you f***ing kidding me?" In response, he grabbed the door staff and immediately had me kicked out of the bar. My friend went with me as he was just as surprised and utterly offended as I was. I intend to go back next Monday afternoon (5-12) and issue a formal complaint with management against this bartender (who is middle-aged, wore a ball cap, and had a bit of a mullet). I have never been kicked out of a bar in my life. I am stunned at this bartenders complete lack of professionalism and dedication to serve his clientele.

I was there that night and if you weren't drunk, then you have social issues because you were acting like a witch. You and your friend were the ones that attacked the bouncer first!! My story is too long to write here, just want to say that NO ONE deserves to be treated the way me and my friends were last time we were there-- I had a drink thrown in my face and was strangled by one of the NUTCASE bouncers. I was not wasted or arguing with him or anything, I had done NOTHING wrong. Don't patronize this bar or it could happend to you, too. The bouncers are thugs and roid heads, and the cops won't do a damn thing to help you out.

The old women who claims to be the manager could not be bothered when we asked if his behavior was a little excessive. Actually I think there is something mentally wrong with her because she kept asking what was our problem. Oh I get it I pay for my drinks just so I can watch another patron get the crap beat out of him, and be treated like crap by a nimrod manager named Val. Never again.

I don't know what everyone is talking about. The bouncers kick out people that deserve it...and if they get punched at, they ARE allowed to hit back! Same as any other bar!!! And btw...it's actually illegal to have dancing at a bar that doesn't have a permit. And I'm guessing that a place like Lyle's doesn't have one of these...does it seem like a place that would?

Lyle's was at one point my favorite bar. Hell, I've had bartenders that used to work at Lyle's recognize me at other bars. I don't know if that speaks more about my drinking, or how much I loved the place though. Now, I will not go in that place. The bouncer is an ass with an ego problem and takes every opportunity to start fights with people there. I've seen him hit women, spit in people's faces, talk sh!t about people there, and throw people out for all sorts of stupid things. Lyle's sucks, their bouncer sucks, and I could care less if I never go in that place again. It's sad becuase I used to love everything about Lyle's, but that one asshole has totally ruined it. Once he's gone though, I'll be back over there sitting in my favorite booth and throwing money in the juke again.

I would not call this an average "dive bar", those are in western Wisconsin. This is a great local bar for ppl who hate the clubs and high class bullshite atmosphere and prices. If you just wanna place to relax, kick back, and have a decent drink this is the place. Just ignore the stupid bouncers.

The old rule that you get what you pay for should be put on a sign and hung above the door at Lyle's. If the only thing you want out of a bar is dirt cheap drinks, then you might like Lyle's. Other than that, this place has a crappy jukebox, poor/snotty service and it generally feels like the most depressing AA meeting waiting to happen.

The power trip bouncer wouldn't let in my 39 year old friend (who, god bless 'im, looks his age) because his license was one week expired. Unfortunately I already ordered a pitcher and had 2 sandwiches coming (friend was running late). They kicked us out, charged us for the beer (fair enough, I had a glass out of it), but added insult to injury and charged us for the sandwiches that we couldn't eat in their establishment anyway, and hadn't received yet. Never again.

I really love the atmosphere of this bar, the servers and the bartenders. I go there all the time, though I have questioned that decision recently. The bouncers are absolutely on a power trip. I don't drink much and have been there sober on numerous occasions and have seen the bouncer engage in - to say the least - inappropriately aggressive behavior. If you don't want to deal with drunk people, don't work at a bar. I understand there is a limit, but inciting violence and being verbally abusive without provocation is ridiculous. This place is asking for a lawsuit.

I could not believe my eyes Thursday night!Talk about the biggest jerk to walk the face of the earth. This alki thought the waitress was too slow getting his drink, so he went to the bar to get one, and when the girl came with the drink he had ordered, the jerk refused to pay for it. I could tell the waitress was upset. I don't know what happened but he grabbed her and started aruing with her. I don't care who you are or what you do for a living, no know has the right to place their hands on you. I can not believe the crap those servers have to put up with. If that was me, that guy would be sitting in a cell! Most people who go to Lyle's are pretty cool. All you guys that think you are so above the rest of us, move on down the street!

This bar is mediocre at best. The old lady who runs it/waits is a terrible, terrible hostess, and the tab system is terribly ridgid. When you get your check, the waitress hangs out next to you until you pay it; they're incredibly bitchy about getting paid. Whatever........I'll go to the CC club.

the last two posts are far off. i saw the last posts incident happen. words of wisdom: if you're drunk and a bouncer asks you to leave, just do it. arguing is unnecessary, and totally counter-productive - it won't help you get back in and it won't help your manhood. if you happen to be with friends (regardless of age, size, gender or blood alcohol level) make sure they don't start screaming and crying and threatening the bouncers... they're sober, they're human - and don't like the barrage of insulting names and threats that come with their job, they're supposed to keep the drama out and they aren't trying to get injured by a crazy drunk person throwing a fit. they just want you to leave, so shut up and leave. my advice: have friends that can handle their liquor and can listen when someone asks them to leave

I was there recently, and similar to the post made before this one we had a horrible experience with the bouncer. The old bouncer that they had, big guy with all the tats was awesome. The new guy is a total jerk. A friend of mine was wasted, fell over and understandably was kicked out. The bouncer crossed the line though when he threw him into the wall, started shoving everybody in the group, threw a girl that was with us onto the concrete, and then spit in someones face while his 2 friends tried to calm him down. We should have called the cops on him because we were all outside and he attacked a girl that's all of 5'3". I'll never go back to that place again, it used to be one of my favorite bars but I don't really care to put up with pricks that hit women working there.

A decent dive bar, but nothing to write home about. Clientelle consists of the usual uptown crowd and the atmosphere is typical of seedy bars. One word of caution: DO NOT OPEN A TAB - PAY AS YOU ORDER! Maybe it was just a bad night for the bartender, but my credit card was double-charged for the drinks my friends and I ordered before the cutoff of 2-for-1 drinks. When my friends and I left the bar at 1:00 am, I calmly told the bartender that 3 of the 12 drinks we ordered should have been 2-for-1 and that we were charged for 3 beers that should not have been charged to my card (3 beers of which the bartender gave us specifically because it was the "2-for-1" happy hour deal - we didn't even ask for the 3 additional beers). The bartender didn't say a word when I disputed the 3 beers charged to my card - he just walked away. I waited 8 to 10 minutes for him to come back to talk to me and he never did - he stayed on the other side of the bar, avoiding me I assume. I walked to the other side of the bar and told him that I would pay for the 3 extra beers, even though they should have been free. I also mentioned it was no way to do business; that it was a "shady" business deal to double-charge a patron after claiming a 2-for-1 happy hour special. Again, the bartender didn't say a word to me but asked the bouncer to escort me out of the establishment - after I paid my bill, of course. Because I am not, and was not, belligerent, the bouncer waited patiently until I signed the receipt, added a tip (I always tip), and took my copy, then he whisked me away like chattel and tried to pick a fight with me outside. I told him to keep his hands off of me, that I was not going to fight him and tried to leave but he wouldn't let me walk away. Two of the bouncer's friends surrounded me and the bouncer pushed me five or six times, trying to provoke me to fight I assume, before my friends came out to see where I had gone. Luckily my friends came looking for me when they did because the situation dissolved as soon as our numbers equaled those of the bouncer and his two friends. Lesson: don't use the phrase "shady business deal" or dispute ANYTHING, as trivial as it may seem, at Liquor Lyle's unless you are prepared to get kicked out, get in a fight and pay your unlawfully charged bill.

I appreciate the "come as you are" vibe this place has, but I have had enough with their rough-around-the-edges staff. The other night, I found myself standing next to a bunch of broken glass. I alerted the next cocktail waitress that walked, she looked at me like I was an idiot and said "um...yeah, that's because somebody dropped their glass" and walked on. WTF?!? I had half a mind to take my shoe off, stomp on the ground and say "and now you have lawsuit on your hands!"

I thought you guys were just being picky, but the bad reviews are true for this place - at happy hour the 2 for 1 tap beers are 10 ounces. That's not such a great deal anymore. After seeing the tiny cups I thought I'd order beer in the bottle but their selection is atrocious. I didn't order any mixed drinks but they looked equally tiny. This happy hour is not a good deal.

Good bar... 2 for 1s! Although the beers on tap during two for ones are small (stick with bottles). The staff is very nice unless you're acting like a retard. The atmosphere isn't too exciting, so if you go to a bar for its furnishings, don't bother going to lyle's.

75 cent taps are great...Lyles is great...some of the servers are really slow.....I recommend sitting @ the bar...the bouncer is not rude regardless of what other people say. I wish i was at lyles right now instead of at work.....Big buck hunter is also awesome.

The drinks are weak cause they put them a skinny glass, which might be 6oz of beverage when considering the copius amounts of ice they put in there. Thus, the 2-4-1 is really just getting one drink.

Not sure what the other two reviewers were talking about with the "weak drinks" because every drink I've had there is pretty strong. Sometimes almost too strong. Of course I only go there from 9-11 on any given night for two for ones. Good place to start out at. I just don't like the environment too much. There's nothing really to offer.

Great place to go even though there seems to be a lot of "suits" in there more and more. The juke box wouldn't suck if dumb ass people with no idea of good music stopped picking songs. 2 for 1's kick ass. Just watch out for the ho's unless you're into fuck bags. At Happy Hour some drinks are happier than others. Instead of 1 16-oz pint you get 2 10-oz glasses. 20 oz instead of 16 is 5-for-4, not 2-for-1. bottled beer is a better option, and their cocktails are strong but not large. The Happy Hour appetizers are regular priced even though a special is advertised. I like Lyles a lot - I'd like them better if they'd be more clear about their specials.
