The Turf Club is easily one of the best places to catch live music. Why? It’s certainly not the sound quality or the décor, but rather the intimacy and energy that the live music seems to generate here on a nightly basis. We’ve never met a mean or stuck-up snob here. Even nights with low attendance are fun. Head downstairs and chill in the “Clown Lounge, a 70’s style lounge area decked with scary clown statues and circus posters. The best part about the Turf Club is the low cover charges, usually between $2-10, but usually closer to $2. Just try to get there early for popular shows, the Turf Club fills up quickly and lines quickly form outside the door. The interior houses a long bar along the side, a scary rock club bathroom, large booths along the other side, and tables in the back middle (with a small dance floor up front). It is a true rock club and is dark, dingy, and surprisingly inviting. If you aren’t too into the music they also have a few pinball machines and pool tables to pass the time. The walls and stage are lined in Christmas tree lights and a thick smokey haze forms from a combination of chain smoking and low ceilings. We recommend the Turf Club for any night that you want to go and see live, loud, and fun music. Take the Snelling Avenue exit off Interstate 94 and head a few blocks north. The Turf club is located right in the heart of Midway in St. Paul. PARKING- is easily found off street or late night on University.

Turf club is OK. It's a club for wannabe musicians to strut their stuff.

I thought this place was really badass when I first turned 21 and could finally go out to the bar. 5 years later, though, the charm has definitely worn off and I've outgrown it by about 4 years. That said, the bartenders have always been really nice there and the drinks are cheap! Recommended for all the broke little early-20's punkrockers who want to hang out like-minded people.

There are so many dicks and dickheads in this place it should be a gay bar. Maybe it is. All it has is music and that sucks. It is only around because there is no competition. Musicians who hang out there suck, too. It should be closed

this is the only bar to go to in st. paul. that is, if you don't like the douchy-frat-kid atmosphere of the bars on Grand. All the bartenders are great, the atmosphere is laid back, and the clown lounge is the subterranean icing on the cake. The Turf Club could kick "Gabes" ass any day in my book. Cheers!

If you find the smell of stale beer and vomit to be charming, then this is your place. The only thing the Turd Club has going for it is the lack of other St Paul music venues. Amateur noise bands outnumber the decent talent 10 to 1.

-- The Lizard King gave this bar a 1 out of 5 at 15:45 11.30.08

decent place with good music and a fun oldschool photobooth... but the last few times I've been, the beer on tap was very weak. I asked for another pour, and got a really rude response from the bartender. the beer tasted like water.

-- thelastround gave this bar a 3 out of 5 at 15:39 11.21.08

i usually have a decent time here. one time at bar close a girl that had smoked me up asked if "this was going to happen". I appreciated her straight-forwardness.

Close-minded cliquish booking staff. If your trying to make inroads in the local music scene, don't bother with this place because they just want to hear themselves and the million variation of bands of the same 30 people play for each other ad nauseam.

NO JOHNNY PRESLEY??!!!??

-- Manly Mann gave this bar a 1 out of 5 at 19:34 06.26.08

loud and fun but the bartenders can be crappy jerks. they have a very minimal beer selection but all the beers are good, and there is pinball.

+ Good music. Plenty of seating. - Beer a bit spendy. (imports especially) Five bucks for a decent beer, wtf.

-- Dr3 gave this bar a 4 out of 5 at 18:11 03.31.07

Great place to see live music. Little bit upset that there is no clown lounge anymore....but still all in all a great place!

This used to be a sleepy little bar where 70 year old alcoholics who look line the old man of the sea used to come and drink. Then, one fateful night, college bands were invited and a bunch of Mac students ran them out of beer. Lesson learned. Now local bands and some touring bands keep this place full. Modest drink prices and low covers help a lot too.

I'd love this bar if every time I stepped in the door I wasn't met with a wall of cigarette smoke so thick and stale, you'd think it was an AA meeting. It's intolerable. If you're going to allow smoking in your club, have the courtesy to install proper ventilation. TH, you need to update your "smoking ordinance" sidebar as this does not apply to certain st. paul establishments. It's really sad that I have to miss so many good shows because of the rank air at the Turf.

-- Sally gave this bar a 1 out of 5 at 09:38 03.29.06

casual but energetic atmosphere, hip decor, fantastic bands at a great cover-though i admit, i only go when my favorite bands are playing.

-- kristin gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 17:44 03.28.06

REALLY loud, fun if you like the band, darts and fun photo booth, bartenders are SLOW SLOW SLOW and sometimes they don't take credit cards which SUCKS. Fun crowd to watch, depends on the band playing. Free parking in streets behind bar which is nice.

-- Jamie gave this bar a 3 out of 5 at 23:10 01.31.06

The clown lounge downstairs is cool but often closed. Music is always loud upstairs, too loud to talk over. If you're getting into the band that is playing it can be great fun. If not you can retreat to the clown lounge to talk. Or walk down the street to Big V's. A lot of 'up and coming' bands play there, which is sometimes awesome, and sometimes annoying, depending if they are any good yet, or if they kinda suck (remember, it's loud). The new owners don't seem as cool as the old ones. The cover seems to have gone up. Overall a unique place that's worth seeing, but it all depends on wether or not you like the band.

I know everyone seems to love the Turf Club, but I just don't get it. I hate going to shows there--they layout is weird and too narrow, there's usually tons of people sitting down who yell at you if you want to stand, and the crowds really chatty. It seems people are there to be seen and chat with their friends rather than listen to the music. I gave it 2 stars rather than one for the cool decor.

-- Elizabeth gave this bar a 2 out of 5 at 18:40 11.30.05

Great place to see live bands, very intimate. Also good variety of live music.

-- Jenny gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 16:52 10.29.05

its just that rob rule is leaving the turf. its not closing down. the new owners say theyre going to stay true to the spirit of the bar and the music.

-- kd gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 15:07 04.28.05

Except for the time when the dick bartender wouldn't give me a glass of water after bar close, I really fucking liked this place. For those of you who don't know, know now. Turf Club is Past Tense baby, R. I. Fucking P.

-- The Janky Yank gave this bar a 4 out of 5 at 23:36 03.31.05

heaven on earth.

-- kirk gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 15:55 03.09.05

every monday night in the clown lounge great jazz and improvised music. lots of artsy people. they're neat to watch.

-- shebo gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 22:15 12.30.04

A great & relaxed place to chill & throw a few cold ones back! The photo booth is great fun!

-- tabcassy gave this bar a 4 out of 5 at 15:51 12.17.04

A great club for catching live music. Posters of Neil Young staring at me from all directions scare me though.

-- Osa gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 11:05 11.15.04

OK, it's a little grubby, but you can't beat the cheap beer, great bands, and easy going staff at the Turf.
