A sweet underground jazz club in St. Paul is dim lit, having the walls lined with old photos of the classic music greats. On of the most comfortable and inviting spots in downtown, the Artist's Quarter is home to lots of national jazz/blues acts (weekends) and wild open mic/local nights Mondays-Wednesdays. All nights carry a cover, but its usually based on the show and for the band, so at least its worth it. The AQ is a great place to take a date and show her how cool you think you are.

Their poetry slam on the first Monday of every month is amazing. Their team won the National Poetry Slam Championship this year!

Best place to hear great jazz Tuesday through Saturday and open mic beat poetry on Mondays. Low covers, cheap drinks and friendly staff. Subterranean, dark and cozy. No pretense but plenty of atmosphere. Everything a jazz club should be. This is where musicians hang out.

Great music, cheap cover, good people, strong drinks. Don't go there...it's my spot.

I came upon this place, and man am I glad I did. Incredible music performed and presented with class and passion. The bartenders are cool, as someone mentioned the doorman is the coolest and the drinks are strong and of value. Not a real big jazz fan normally, but I was completely into it when I went to this place.

Not much on my mind right now. I haven't been up to anything. Today was a complete loss. That's how it is. Not much exciting going on these days.

insanely strong drinks and davis the door guy is one of the coolest cats around. most musician's themselves dig this spot and I trust their judgement. probably one of the last family owned joints around. if you can't have fun down there you're a sorry stuck up jackass like the dude. "B", below who dogged out their house drummer. that guy is grammy nominated you genius. and for the record, hip hop and jazz are more alike than they are different. but you gave the place 1 star out of 5 which means your a hater and most likely an infantile redneck who prefers his jazz musicians white.

even though Holloway is no longer in the Tues band, Downtown is a worth replacement. go there a few times and shoot the shit with the staff and you're in like flynn. drinks are good, okay beer selection and staff is awesome.

This is good place for listening to and watching some jazz music. It's not a good place to come to talk because you will be the only people talking since everyone else comes to listen to the jazz. That being said you can talk between sets and it's a cool atmosphere. If it's a low key jazz club you looking for and your mostly interested in the music, this is definately the place to go. If your out with your friends and mostly interested in chatting, you might feel more comfortable somewhere else.

The owner/drummer drags like a muthafucker. Also, jazz is more than Miles and Coltrane. I like seeing younger kids at places like this, but most of 'em don't know shit about jazz. You see, it's cool for the hip- hoppers to be seen at a jazz spot; they think there is some kind of relation between the two. Nope.

It is indeed a great place... unfortunatly, they don't have Billy Holloman anymore on Tuesdays. They do have Billy "Downtown" Brown who entertains with both his music and his nuanced facial expressions.

I wish they were still in Minneapolis on Nicollet & 26th.

Tuesday night's BELONG to Billy Holloman and the best organ jazz in town.

-- Joseph Ward gave this bar a 5 out of 5 at 15:37 04.16.05

Great for local comedians on Monday nights! Its free and there is usually a good crowd. The rest of the time, they play jazz.
